Why I Like My DUMB Phone

GO DUMB PHONES GO

Although smart phones are cool, I like my dumb flip phone with its teeny T9 keypad. There are a lot of reasons, but here’s my top three:

  1. A dumb phone will not surprise you. There won’t be a time that it runs out of storage because the only thing on it is a picture of my house. I won’t see a huge bill because it is impossible to go over data, or for that matter, use data. It will actually not freeze and lag! It will not reach a point that the phone crawls at the slowest possible speed. The battery will not die because no one is using it to play 3D games. It is simple, and simple is good.
  2. It is not a distraction. Angry Birds will not let beep and ding because the pigs are angry and somehow gravity was defied and it is giving you’re a space eagle (I think…). There won’t be pages and pages of games available at a single touch. You won’t get the urge to see a kitty cat meowing on YouTube, or if Miss. Piggy’s dress is better than Taylor Swift. Also, I won’t be wasting time looking at random things on the internet.
  3. IT IS A PHONE!!! The definition of a telephone from the Merriam Webster Dictionary: “an instrument for reproducing sounds at a distance; specifically: one in which sound is converted into electrical impulses for transmission (as by wire or radio waves)”. Now smart phone “a cell phone that includes additional software functions (as e-mail or an Internet browser)” I have my Mac and my iPod for the “additional software functions”. My phone is a TOOL to keep me safe and to be able to communicate conveniently. There isn’t anything more I would expect a phone to do than call and text. However people in this time and age thinks that phones need to be able to do everything. Several cellular companies in my area do not even carry dumb phones anymore. The companies who do carry dumb phones put them at the end.

…and that’s why I like my dumb Samsung flip phone.

Ok, fine, I confess, I love making the impossible, using photoshop, confusing people, making them laugh, adding my personal touch to everything, etc. I feel happy when I amaze others.

But do I really want to pay the hundreds to acquire photoshop?

Well, I don’t have the money. So, I found this multiplatform free software, Gimp. It’s a replica of Photoshop, if not better. It is simply epic. Nothing could be better. They have forums, manuals, help files, and all the support you can get.

If you heard of this little tool, I won’t be surprised because it is very well known. Anyways, it is truly amazing what Gimp can do.

I hope that Gimp can stay in our society for a while, but for now… Go Gimp Go!

New and Noteworthy Gadgets

These are absolutely the funniest things ever! Have you ever abused the “snooze” button? Well, you will no more with Clocky or Tocky. These adorable robots developed by MIT will allow you to snooze only once. After that, it will jump down from your bedside table and run around the room beeping. Next, it will find a hiding spot and keep on beeping until you actually get up and close it.

I stumbled across it several times, it seems that every time some crazy gadget goes in to the market (or even before), the news goes crazy over it. Well of course not the formal ones like CNN, but rather the unofficial news/rumor sites.

The link is here.

This is only for the ones who love gadgets, I mean, who would risk getting fired just to sleep in? At least, not me.

Here’s another interesting gadget, the Disney AppMATes.

It combines a physical toy with the magic of the iPad. For $20, you can buy 2 Cars 2 Hot Wheels size vehicles which are made to be able to  run on the iPad. With a free app, children can actually use a physical toy to interact with the digital world. The cars can talk to other characters, they can race and run on race courses, plus fly, jump, etc. With add ons such as wings, it is another creative idea coined by Disney.

The only problem I can foresee is toddlers thinking any car can be paired with the iPad and scratching the screen, or landing a jump too hard.

What a difference between the carpets with roads we had back in the times of the dinos!

Post a comment! Do you like them? Why or why not? Really, someone had to make these sooner or later.

Oh ya, and by the way, “New and Noteworthy” was totally not from Apple. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, hope you don’t mind the sarcasm.
